An extract from A Soldier Like Jack
‘A heavy silence fell across the room as we all attempted to understand the implications of what he was saying, and in the end we didn’t say much more that night – or even when the morning came. He had given us plenty to think about, and we were left to wonder about the survival behaviour of men in war.
When Alfred went back to The Front, I wondered whether he was one of the clever ones, and because he had recognised this as being a quality of those who were surviving, would he be one of the survivors? I spent many days pondering over that; sometimes that was all we had, time to ponder while we waited. I also wondered whether my Jack was one of the ones who would survive through cunning and, I suppose, strategy. Was Jack a man like that? Was he shrewd? Somehow I doubted that very much, and that thought sent shivers down my spine.’ …

I am an author and a lecturer in veterinary nursing and companion animal welfare.
I've now written six books and a vegan cookery book: A Dog Like Ralph, Lilac Haze', 'A Soldier Like Jack', and 'The Diary of a Human and a Dog (or three!)'
The vegan cookbook is imaginatively entitled 'Vegan Cookbook'! I love animals and despise any form of animal cruelty. I've been vegan since 2002 — my only regret about this is that I didn't become vegan sooner. I dream of a world in which there is no human or animal suffering, one in which governments across the world take seriously (and act upon) the threats posed to our fragile environment and its people and animals.
I live with three dogs and love spending time with them and my husband and son. Like most writers, I love to read, and particularly like to read books about animals. On here you’ll find some reviews of books that I’ve read and loved in which animals are the main focus.
My first non-animal novel Picture Me Now (although some animals do creep into its pages), presented a new challenge for me in that I had to delve into the depths of my imagination much more that I had to with previous books. I loved getting lost in another world!
Please get in touch and let me know what you think about my books.
